Overview

The Wemmershoek Traverse is one of the best-known mountain traverses near Cape Town, offering easy access to both the start and finish. If you’ve ever gazed across to Paarl from the city, you’ve seen these towering peaks, now it’s time to conquer them.

Unlike a typical hike, a traverse takes you across rugged terrain without a defined path for much of the journey. If you’re new to this type of adventure, check out this guide on how to prepare for a traverse vs. a regular hike.

The route begins on a beautiful trail up to Hugenotkop on the Paarl side via the Miaspoort Path, before leading into the heart of the mountains. The descent reconnects with the Perdekop Path on the Franschhoek side, making for an epic point-to-point journey through Wemmershoek’s wild landscapes.

Guidance

The Wemmershoek Traverse is relatively straightforward to navigate. While there are a few scattered cairns, you can usually spot the next peak ahead, making it easy to follow the natural line of the route.

This traverse is fully exposed, so be sure to pack sunscreen and protective gear, there’s no escaping the sun out here! Unlike a summit-focused hike, there’s no need to climb every peak along the way. You can stick to the most efficient line through the valley, making for a smoother journey toward Franschhoek.

When tackling the ascents and descents, avoid the rock gardens and look for clearer, more navigable terrain. A quick glance at the contour lines on a map will help you find the gradual, least strenuous route up and over each ridge. Plan smart, move efficiently, and enjoy the adventure!

Water

There is water at the rivers and mini lakes as seen below, we also found more water in addition to the below. Take purification tablets in case the water is not flowing.

Fitness and Weather

The Wemmershoek Traverse demands a high level of fitness and a solid understanding of mountain conditions, but it’s accessible with the right preparation. At a staggering 1,700m, you’re rewarded with breathtaking views, feeling completely isolated with the world spread out beneath you. However, such heights mean the weather can shift in an instant. Be sure to pack a high-quality, breathable rain jacket that keeps you dry and shielded from wind while allowing you to move comfortably through the challenging terrain.

Sleeping arrangements

There are plenty of flat, comfortable spots in the valley to set up camp, just avoid the exposed ridgelines for safety. The natural terrain often offers some shelter from gusty winds, ensuring a more restful night under the stars.

Peaks

We highly recommend taking the time to ascend Wemmershoek Peak at least once, it’s a hidden gem with a formerly established path that makes the climb one of the easier ones on the traverse. And if you’re feeling particularly heroic, consider rallying support to petition Cape Nature to rebuild and maintain the trail from Mont Rochelle to Wemmershoek Peak. Making these stunning areas more accessible helps ensure that nature’s beauty is enjoyed by everyone.
